Deep tissue – as its name implies, goes beyond the superficial manipulation of your body’s muscles and connective soft tissue. This modality addresses the deeper layers of your musculoskeletal system. Deep tissue massage is results-driven. Frequently the desired outcome may be alleviating chronic pain and/or pain management and stiffness by applying deep pressure and slow strokes.
During a deep tissue massage, your therapist uses their hands, fingertips, knuckles, elbows, and forearms to apply firm pressure to specific areas of the body. Techniques such as stripping, friction and kneading are used to break up adhesions AKA knots and release muscle tension. Deep tissue massage can be beneficial if you experience chronic pain, muscle injuries, or limited mobility. It can help improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, promote relaxation, and relieve tightness and discomfort in the affected areas.
During a deep tissue massage, it’s important to communicate effectively with your therapist. Since less massage product is used, than with a Swedish massage, the pressure can be intense and potentially uncomfortable. That makes it crucial to let your therapist know if you experience any pain or discomfort. Remembering to take deep breaths throughout the massage aids in managing the pressure intensity. Your massage therapist can adjust the pressure according to your comfort level to ensure a therapeutic and safe experience.
Overall, deep tissue massage can be an effective treatment for targeting deep layers of muscular tension and promoting overall relaxation and well-being. Mount Carmel Fitness Center massage therapists are nationally certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and are licensed massage therapists by the State of Ohio.
Massages can be 30, 60 or 90 minutes in length and are available to members and non-members. Massages can be purchased as a single session or part of a package. To schedule your next massage or for more information, please call 740-879-4850.
